A LITTLE GUIDANCE

Make yourself
at home.

Your guide to setting up, shaping and getting the most out of Mallow.

Start with the essentials

Mallow 1.0 is an Online Store 2.0 theme for warm, editorial pet stores. This guide covers the built-in setup and customization options.

Before you start

  1. Duplicate the theme before making code changes or installing an app that edits theme files.
  2. Add your products, collections, navigation menus, store policies and contact details in Shopify admin.
  3. Open Online Store → Themes → Customize to configure Mallow through the Theme Editor.
  4. Preview changes on desktop and mobile before publishing.

Custom code is outside standard theme support. If you are not comfortable editing Liquid, CSS or JavaScript, work with a qualified Shopify Partner.

Brand and global settings

Open Theme settings in the Theme Editor to configure the settings shared across the storefront.

  • Brand: upload your logo and favicon, then adjust the logo width.
  • Typography: choose body and heading fonts and select a compact, balanced or expressive type scale.
  • Layout: control page width, page margins, section spacing and grid gaps.
  • Colors: set background, surface, text, primary, accent, border and focus colors.
  • Shapes and buttons: adjust corner radii, button height and label weight.
  • Motion: choose off, subtle or expressive motion. Mallow also respects the visitor's reduced-motion preference.
  • Social media: add Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube links.

Header and navigation

The header supports a desktop navigation menu, accessible mobile navigation, localization controls, search, customer accounts and cart access.

  1. Create or edit your menu under Content → Menus.
  2. Open the Header section in the Theme Editor.
  3. Select the menu and configure the logo and navigation behavior.
  4. Test long menu labels at tablet and desktop widths.

The announcement bar is managed as its own section and can be hidden when it is not needed.

Homepage

Mallow includes configurable sections for the hero, Shop by pet, featured products, promotional banner, benefits, brand story, testimonials, social gallery, newsletter and welcome popup.

  • Use Shopify image pickers for merchant imagery. Supply descriptive alt text in the Shopify media library.
  • Select real products and collections instead of placing product data in text fields.
  • Keep headings concise so layouts remain balanced on small screens.
  • Use promotional copy only when the stated offer is active and accurate.
  • The welcome popup can be disabled and its timing and newsletter copy can be edited.

Product pages

The product template supports Shopify images, video, external video and 3D models where the product provides them. It also includes thumbnails, variant selection, quantity, add to cart, dynamic checkout, inventory messaging, pickup availability, product information blocks and recommendations.

  • Manage media, variants, prices, inventory and descriptions on the product in Shopify admin.
  • Use product metafields for structured product details where your catalog requires them.
  • Configure pickup locations and inventory in Shopify before enabling pickup messaging.
  • Test available, unavailable, sold-out, sale and single-variant products.
  • App blocks and Custom Liquid can be added in supported product areas through the Theme Editor.

Collection and search templates include responsive product grids, sorting, pagination and Shopify-native storefront filters.

  1. Install or open Shopify Search & Discovery.
  2. Configure the filters that should be available to customers.
  3. Open the collection or search template in the Theme Editor and enable filtering and sorting where required.
  4. Check filter labels and product data in every published market and language.

Cart

Mallow provides a cart drawer and a full cart page. Quantity controls, removal, cart notes, discounts, totals and checkout continue to use Shopify-native cart data and routes.

Test the cart with multiple products, double-digit quantities, sold-out changes and any cart app blocks you add.

Content pages

The theme includes styled templates for About, Contact, Blog, Article, generic pages, 404, Password and Gift Card experiences. Customer accounts are rendered by Shopify and have limited theme-level styling when new customer accounts are enabled.

Create merchant content in Shopify admin and select the appropriate template in the page, blog or product settings.

Images and performance

  • Upload the smallest source image that still looks sharp at its displayed size.
  • Use consistent aspect ratios within product and editorial grids.
  • Avoid embedding large autoplaying videos above the fold.
  • Do not add third-party animation libraries for effects that the theme already provides.
  • After installing apps, retest performance and remove app code that is no longer used.

Accessibility

Mallow includes semantic controls, visible focus states, keyboard-friendly dialogs and reduced-motion behavior. Merchants remain responsible for accessible content.

  • Write meaningful image alt text and link labels.
  • Keep heading levels in a logical order.
  • Do not rely on color alone to communicate meaning.
  • Check color contrast after changing the theme palette.
  • Add captions or transcripts for meaningful video and audio content.

Frequently asked questions

Why are collection filters not visible?

Filters must first be configured in Shopify Search & Discovery. A filter also needs relevant product data before it can appear on a collection or search result.

Why is pickup availability not shown?

Confirm that local pickup is enabled for a location, the selected variant is stocked there and pickup availability is enabled in the product section.

Can I disable animations?

Yes. Set Motion to Off in Theme settings. Visitors who request reduced motion through their device settings also receive a reduced-motion experience automatically.

Can support customize the theme for my store?

Standard support covers theme setup questions and reproducible theme bugs. Store-specific design work, custom code, data entry and third-party app configuration are separate services.

What should I include in a bug report?

Include your store URL, Mallow theme version, affected page, browser and device, steps to reproduce, expected result and screenshots or a short recording when helpful.
